THE FORTS OF NASSAU.
By: Alfredo E. Figueredo (Member of A.I.A.C.).
The first stone fort built in this city was Fort Nassau, which was sited where today a tourist hotel rises. This redoubt, which no longer exists, mounted fifty-four cannon and twenty-six mortars in 1744.
Today. there remain three forts and several batteries; the forts are called Fort Charlotte, Fort Fincastle and Fort Montagu.
The first, Fort Charlotte, was built by Lord Dunmore, Governor of the Bahama Islands during the American War of Independence.
Fort Charlotte is characterized by its dry moat and its two enormous bastions shaped like drums, facing the western entrance to the harbor.
Afterward, other bastions were added, as in the typical wedge-shaped ones of what was called Fort Stanley, built in 1792-1796, and in 1796, the quadrilateral of Fort D'Arcy, facing inland, which is the first photograph.
The second, Fort Fincastle, was built on the top of Society Hill, also by Lord Dunmore. Fincastle was one of his titles of nobility.
Fort Fincastle seems to be a gigantic keel of stone sailing the highest hill in the city. It is not as inexpugnable as the great fortified complex of Fort Charlotte.
The most modest of the forts is Fort Montagu, completed in July of 1742, and it guarded the eastern entrance to the harbor, where the sea narrows to the distance of a musket shot.
Its quadrilateral has some sixty feet on each side, and originally it mounted seventeen cannon. This is one of the small towers that used to be built in places deemed to be of strategic value.
